7 Ways To Get 1000 Followers On Twitter

Just two days ago I broke the 1000 followers milestone on Twitter. I wasn’t able to witness the actual event live cause I was sleeping. By the time I woke up, it was already 1,008 followers. Anyways, here are just a couple of tips on how you can increase your follower count:

  1. Follow Others - That’s the simplest way (and the most often used way by spammers). Just follow others who share similar interests, and if they find your bio or website or tweets interesting, they will follow you back. But don’t over do it otherwise you will end up in the twitter blacklist (or even suspended in some cases)
  2. Promote Your Twitter - I promoted my twitter everywhere, from my blog to my email list to forum signatures. Do whatever you can to send tons of traffic to your twitter page.
  3. Engage In Conversations - If people don’t see you actually engaging in conversations i.e. replying to other people’s tweets then they will see you as unsocial and simply unfollowing you. Twitter is about interaction and relationships. Just think of it this way: will you still continue following someone who just simply ignores you? Unless he or she is a celebrity or thought-leader, probably no. One-way communication just doesn’t work to well on Twitter.
  4. Become An Authority - That way you’ve already got an established following so you aren’t really building your twitter base from the ground up…
  5. Tweet Useful Content - Simply tweet stuff that are interesting or useful and people will follow you. If all you do is tweet “at work” or “at home” or “at school”, you probably won’t get too many followers.
  6. Tweet Often - Not tweeting is one of the biggest turn-offs to a follower. It’s just like not updating your blog for a couple of months. People will simply not come back to your site (or unfollow you in this case) Make sure to tweet at least once per day. Of course don’t over do it.
  7. Read StanleyTang.com - No kidding. You’ll learn plenty of tips on traffic generation and building a following :)

I definitely agree that Twitter is a great tool to build relationships with your prospects as well as your joint venture partners. Will definitely come into a big play for my book launch.

Enjoy.

The point of this post is still just adding random people on twitter to inflate your own followers count. When twitter was becoming popular, which was during the time bloggers started talking about it, I added about 8,000 people on my account. It seems like there’s a cap on how much you can add now, but I believe I had about 4,000 following back.

@Bryan absolutely. I personally use it more as an relationship building tool as opposed to traffic generation.

    @Hamida Thanks

@Chris You can try and encourage people on your blog to sign up for Twitter and follow you like that. When I first got on Twitter, not many internet marketers had twitter accounts so I had to tell them to sign up for a twitter account in order to follow me. BTW, this was exactly how Twitter spread like crazy.

@Mike There was a Twitter experiment going on where they created a fake profile and simply added 40,000 people. 8000 followed back. Yes, this is one way to inflate your Twitter account, but do these followers actually CARE about what you tweet? I’m pretty sure the conversion rates are going to be much lower as opposed to those that take the initiative follow you. You can find out a rough conversion rate of your twitter followers by conducting a simple experiment - just ask them a question and see how many respond. If you built your Twitter following correctly, you should be getting around 5% of your followers to respond. If you did not, you’re probably looking at around 1% or even less. Just my thoughts.

How about using program such as Automatic Wealth Maker?

I heard they are using the power of twitter to drive insane numbers of people following the “tweets”..

What’s your opinion on this? Does AWM work?
Any AWM user here who wanna share their experience?

  • 7 Stanley Tang // Oct 18, 2008 at 12:22 pm

I have no idea what Automatic Wealth Maker is so I am not making any judgments on the product. But if I were you I will stay FAR FAR away from any “twitter follower or following generator” softwares. I prefer organic methods that bring me in QUALITY followers, rather than simply spamming.

EDIT: Okay, I read some reviews off the forum. Looks like this IS one of those twitter softwares that automatically add followers and rips off sites like Google News and simply create automated tweets. STAY FAR FAR FAR AWAY FROM THOSE TYPE OF SOFTWARES. You will simply get your twitter account banned.

Certainly the part of the promotion is the most important thing, if you don’t promote your account how do you expect to be followed?

    Good tips :P

Stanley, on point 1, how could you get blacklisted just for following people? That doesn’t make sense to me.

  • 11 Stanley Tang // Oct 20, 2008 at 12:20 am

@Chris if your following vs followers ratio is way too high (cause you followed more people than people follow you) then it will look pretty unhealthy. If you do it tooo aggresively, then you either end up in this blacklist (not necessarily Twitter’s blacklist but there are websites out there that do those kind of stuff) or your account might get investigated by twitter for “strange activities”. If you are really unlucky, it might just get suspended cause they think you are using some sort of script that automatically follow people.

I forgot to reply here, but just wanted to say that I had that Twitter account created just to have an extra network to market a website. It doesn’t matter how many actually reply to me, but if I knew Twitter would have a Top #100 list, I would have been there by now.

I was focusing more on the long run.

BTW, I noticed you have an interview by Michael, but I’m curious to know how much money you have made?

Hi Stanley. I like all of these, but especially “Engage in conversation.” I understand that it is okay to give out quotes, and URLs to important sites. As a matter of fact, I do it all the time. It’s good content and I love when others do it too! But to never engage in conversation is really strange to me. I know of Tweeters, and I am not just referring to MLMers or SEOers who never tweet anything but blog posts, and often only their own. Okay, I just had a revelation! I bet they are not even there on Twitter at the time their own blog posts are being Tweeted! They are using the service they program to auto tweets their posts at a later time! That’s why their not responding. Sigh. That’s okay to do on occassion, but to use the service and fill up the Twitter stream every few minutes while you are not online for days, well I feel that is plain insensitive to the rest of the twitter tweeples.

Once you have a few visitors (1000+ is great!) add a TwitterCounter to your blog. It shows people that you are worth following.
