So I just came back from an interview conducted by a local newspaper in Hong Kong called Apple Daily regarding the release of my book, eMillions: Behind-The-Scenes Stories of 14 Internet Millionaires.
According to ACNielsen (the same company that does the ratings for TV etc), Apple Daily is the number-two bestselling newspaper in Hong Kong. So in theory I should be getting plenty of publicity. But shame it’s a Chinese newspaper and I doubt many of them would be interested in “internet marketing” or even read English books. Or perhaps that could be the reason why they would want to buy my book - to learn more about the internet by reading those stories
Who knows.

Anyways, back to the interview. Although it was my first ever time getting interviewed by a press, for some reason I wasn’t nervous at all. It was definitely a lot more nerve-wracking to interview those 14 gurus than to be interviewed. The interview was off to a shaking start when the first question she asked was “What do you do?” There was this awkward 5 second blank as I could’t answer that simple question. I mean, how on earth was I suppose to explain the concept of internet marketing or affiliate marketing or google adsense or blogging to somebody who knows very little about the internet? Plus to make things more complicated it was in Chinese. Anybody who can translate affiliate marketing into Chinese let me know in the comments section and I will give you a mystery prize
Then we talked about stuff like how it affected my school stuff, whether or not I wanted to give up, where I want to go for uni etc. It was pretty brief and I certianly didn’t go too deep. She also asked me what I think about money and whether or not now is a good time to start a company (cause of the bad economy). They were pretty random questions and very little related to internet marketing (apart from when she asked what I do and how I make money).
I’ll put up the newspaper extract on my blog once they’ve published/sent me a copy of it. For those of you who can’t read Chinese… well too bad. You’ll have to go and learn Chinese
But seriously though, I will put the article up and try my best to translate it.

You are so smart! I am seven years old and studying in primary 6 now. Can you tell me how your professor father helps you during the ages as i am. My father always wants me to learn more and play less. But you know, at the age like I am now, I eager to play. Can I share your experiences?

It does get a little interesting when the tables are turned and someone is officially asking you as the local expert. Great Job. What helps me the most is to have a 30 sec. elevator sales pitch on what I do. Any job should be able to be told in 30 seconds and draw interest. In short, the pitch will answer: What problem do you solve, who is your niche, how will your niche use the problem you have solved.
For example, I provide (solution to the problem) for (the niche) so that they can (use of the solution).
